History of the WTA Cincinnati Open Women's Singles Tournament

The Cincinnati Open began in 1899 as a clay courts event. The surface was mostly unchanged until it became a hard court tournament in 1979. It’s had a number of different names, beginning as the Open, before becoming the Tri-State Tennis Tournament from 1901 to 1969, and then cycling through different names, including the Cincinnati Masters.

A women’s singles draw was added to the competition in 1920. However, that was not to be a permanent fixture. It was dropped in 1975, and it only became a regular occurrence again in 2004. Now, it has been folded into the ATP and WTA Tours, as part of the Masters 1000 and WTA 1000, respectively.

Who is Playing in the WTA Cincinnati Open Women's Singles 2025?

The biggest names in women’s tennis will be gracing the Cincinnati stage this August. We’ve picked out a number of big names for you to keep an eye on for the 2025 edition for a number of reasons:

Iga Swiatek

Fresh off winning her maiden Wimbledon title, the young Pole looks ready to establish herself as the best in women’s tennis. She’ll be looking to warm up well and reclaim the US Open for the first time since 2002, adding to her six Slams and 23 overall titles.

Aryna Sabalenka

The Belarusian star is the holder of the Cincinnati Open after she won it and the Australian and US Opens in 2024, so she will be confident she can add to her 20 career titles. She will have been disappointed to fall at the semifinal hurdle again at Wimbledon, so another win here could be just the tonic.

Jessica Pegula

The American will feel like time is running out for her at 31. She only has nine career titles to her name and has yet to win a Slam, despite reaching a US Open in 2024. A maiden Cincinnati Open crown could set her on the right path in preparation for the final Slam.

Amanda Anisimova

Another American representative, Anisimova will have been embarrassed to have come out of the 2025 Wimbledon final without claiming a single game against Swiatek. If she can go one better than she did in London, she could add to her three WTA Tour titles.

Belinda Bencic

Bencic is another player who will be smarting after a loss to Iga Swiatek. Her semifinal defeat wasn’t quite a walkover, but claiming only two games in the match would have hurt. She could make it 10 career titles here if she can learn from her Wimbledon defeat.

How to Bet on the Cincinnati Open & Tennis Bet Types

Whether you’re new to placing bets on tennis events or are an experienced bettor, there are some bet types that you should keep in mind when betting on Stake:

  • Total Games: When you place a totals bet on games, you’re guessing how many games will occur in a match. Unlike moneyline betting, you don’t have to choose a winner - you just have to predict the number of games correctly.

  • Set Handicap: This form of set betting will be familiar to anyone who’s bet on soccer or other similar sports. When you place a handicap bet, you are giving your chosen player’s opponent a head start. For example, if you put a -1.5 on Swiatek, she will have to win by two clear sets for your bet to come home. So, a 2-1 win would see your bet lose.

  • Odd/Even Games: Odds or evens is a simple kind of bet. You’re essentially guessing whether the set or match will end with an odd or even number of games.
