What is Valorant?
Valorant is a popular free-to-play first-person shooter (FPS) developed by Riot Games and launched in June 2020. It’s a tactical 5v5 game that combines the realism and exciting gunplay of games like Counter-Strike 2 with the unique character abilities of hero shooters like Overwatch.
In Valorant, each player takes control of one of the game’s Agents, who utilise unique abilities to turn the tide of battle. Agents are grouped into one of four roles: Duelist, Initiator, Sentinel and Controller. Players must coordinate with their team to either attack or defend the objective. At the start of each round, a buy phase allows players to use currency to purchase weapons and ability charges. Players gain currency based on their previous round performance.
As with other first-person shooters, Valorant has an exciting Esports scene, and you can bet on upcoming leagues, tours, and fixtures throughout the year. Professional Valorant matches use the competitive game mode, which features 13 rounds as teams take it in turns to attempt to plant a device called the spike as the other team attempts to stop them and deactivate the spike.
Valorant was created by Riot Games, which has experience in Esports with the hugely successful League of Legends. The game was developed with competitive play in mind, and Riot Games organised the Valorant Champions Tour (VCT) from 2021. Valorant won the Best Esports Game award at the 2022 and 2023 Game Awards.
