What is roulette?

Roulette is a rich and storied game featuring high payouts and an incredible variety of betting options. It’s also one of the most well-known casino games throughout history.

The aim of roulette is to bet on where you think the ball will land once the virtual wheel stops spinning. The game uses a table to place bets, typically designed with green felt. The wheel has colourful segments that are classically green and red. However, over the years, this has evolved to match the themes used by providers.

Though a simple-looking game of chance involving spinning a wheel, Roulette has sophisticated betting systems. These systems exist within the gameplay to allow a strong betting progression for bankroll management and to suit any player.

The advantage of learning to play Roulette online vs playing classic Roulette at brick-and-mortar casinos is the low house edge to minimise losses. There’s also a variety of roulette games from different software makers. Finally, the different winning combinations help you plan your betting strategy to build your bankroll and win big.

A brief history on roulette

Many believe that roulette was first invented in the 17th century by a French mathematician known as Blaise Pascal. Others believe it was a French monk or even the Chinese who first created this exciting game of chance.

In reality, it appears that Roulette was created in the early 18th century in France, inspired by games like Hoca and Portique.

It was called Roulette for the first time in 1716 in Bordeaux. After being tweaked to match the times and location, it later took on the familiar layout and wheel we know today in 1790.

How to play roulette games?

Roulette is a classic table game of chance with simple rules where the player spins a wheel numbered 0-36 and places bets on where the roulette ball lands within the wheel.

Each number on the roulette wheel is divided into two colours, Red and Black, with each number assigned to a colour based on placement on the board.

  • Numbers 1 - 10, 19-28: Odd numbers are Red, Even numbers are Black

  • Numbers 11-18, 29-36: Odd numbers are Black, Even numbers are Red

The single zero is separate, coloured green, and only available to bet on as an individual option. Some variations (American Roulette) also include a double zero, which increases the house edge of the game.

Each number slot is called a 'pocket', and the pocket placement on the roulette wheel mixes the numbers up in the layout of the roulette wheel, depending on the version of roulette (i.e. American vs European).

Outside bets and inside bets

The types of roulette bets available are broken down into 'outside bets' and 'inside bets'. The ways to bet on roulette are based on how these pockets are grouped, and the payouts rely on how likely the ball is to land in a particular pocket group.

The following is a guide to the betting options in roulette, which may vary based on the specific roulette game you play.

What are Outside bets?

Outside Bets group pockets into large groups, offering the best chance for payouts at a typically lower payout ratio. The ways to place an outside bet on roulette online are:

  • Column: A roulette wheel is organised into three columns of 12 numbers each. This betting type divides the wheel into thirds based on the position of the wheel and has a payout of 2:1.

  • Dozens: Divides pockets based on numbers grouped by the dozen (1-12, 13-24, 25-36). Similar to columns, this divides the spinning wheel into thirds and has a payout of 2:1.

  • Even/Odd: The simple betting format in which the bettor bets whether or not the ball will land on either an odd or even number.

  • Black/Red: In addition to Even/Odd betting, players can also bet on the colour of the pocket the ball lands in after a spin of the roulette wheel. Much like Even/Odd, the payout is even odds, 1:1, as there are an equal number of red pockets as black pockets.

  • Low/High: A simple even/odds bet in which the player can bet on whether the number is low (1-18) or high (19-26). An even odds bet that has a payout of 1:1.

What are Inside bets?

Inside bets are a narrower group of bets that have less frequent, but larger, payouts.

  • Single-Number Bet/Straight Bet: The betting type with the highest payout of 35:1, this type of bet is very simplistic. The player bets on the specific individual number they think the ball will land on.

  • Split: Betting on two adjacent numbers on the roulette wheel, this bet has a high payout of 17:1

  • Street: A street bet is a bet that the player makes for a row of 3 numbers, with a payout of 11:1

  • Corner: A corner bet (also known as a 'square' or 'quarter' bet) is a type of bet where you bet on the 'corner' that joins 4 numbers (i.e. 1, 2, 4, 5), with a payout of 8:1.

  • Basket: The basket bet, only available in American Roulette, is a specific bet on 5 specific numbers in roulette - 0, 00, 1, 2, 3. A simple bet with fixed values, the payout for this is 6:1.

  • Six Line Bet (aka Double Street): The Six line bet allows the bettor to place a bet on two lines, which is why this is also called 'Double Street', where six total numbers are selected from two adjoining rows. This bet has a payout of 5:1.

Roulette strategies and bankroll management

Playing at a virtual roulette table is all about luck, but strategies and betting systems can make all the difference. There’s no way to guarantee where the spin of the roulette wheel will land. But strategies and betting systems can make a difference by helping you manage your budget and boost your chances of winning.

Consider going through some of the popular betting systems in our how-to guides.

The Keefer Betting System is perfect for roulette play and focuses on doubling your wager after every loss. The Martingale Strategy is similar and is also often used specifically for playing roulette. While doubling your bet after a loss is part of the betting system, it’s usually reserved for bets with a 50-50 chance of winning.

While the Oscar’s Grind Betting System isn’t specifically highlighted for use when playing roulette, it can be modified. As a positive progression strategy, Oscar’s Grind is a great way to control betting.
