Introduction to the WTA Tour
The WTA was established in 1973, the year after the ATP, with Billie Jean King seeing the need for a women’s body in tennis. The first ever WTA Tour was held that same year, replacing previous circuits that were largely disorganised by forming one unified calendar of events.
The modern WTA Tour includes eight categories, including the Grand Slams, WTA Finals, WTA 1000, WTA 500, and WTA 250, as well as the international team events, the United Cup, Hopman Cup, and Billie Jean King Cup. All but the final two provide WTA ranking points for players, at different levels based on their prestige.
2025 WTA Tour Recap
When the 2025 WTA Tour wrapped up, Aryna Sabalenka sat atop the tree of the rankings with four titles. That is in stark comparison with the ATP Tour, where Carlos Alcaraz dominated by taking home double that amount. It was clear there was a much more competitive playing field in the WTA.
The Belarusian won the US Open, overcoming Amanda Anisimova, who was making her debut in the final of that competition on home soil. While Anisimova would fall at the final hurdle there, the US was the most successful nation, with Coco Gauff and Madison Keys claiming the French Open and Australian Open, respectively, helping towards a total of 14 singles wins.
Anisimova would make another final, losing to Iga Swiatek in the Centre Court Wimbledon showpiece, ensuring a season of disappointment for the Floridian. It also wasn’t to be in the WTA Finals, as she fell to her Belarusian opponent from the US Open once again in the semifinals.
Kazakh star Elena Rybakina would end up victorious at the Riyadh-held finals, despite sitting 6th in the rankings at the time. It was just more evidence of the excitement on offer in the WTA Tour, with no one player taking control and dominating.
Major 2026 WTA Tennis Tournaments
The four Grand Slam tournaments hosted by the WTA are the Australian Open, the US Open, Wimbledon, and the French Open. These events are the pinnacle of women’s tennis and are what every player wants to win.
That doesn’t mean that these are the only tournaments that mean something to players, though. The WTA schedule is diverse, filled with competitions throughout the year that will offer ranking points to help players climb the ladder to ensure seeding for the Slams and offer a showcase for international talent, including:
Abu Dhabi Open - WTA 500 - February
Madrid Open - WTA 1000 - April
Queen’s Club Championships - WTA 500 - June
Canadian Open - WTA 1000 - August
Billie Jean King Cup Finals - September
WTA Finals - November
Events & Formats on the WTA Tour
The WTA Tour comprises many different events, and there are a couple of distinct formats that you will find. For example, the Slams, such as the Australian Open Women’s singles, are all straight knockout events. This means that players must win every game to progress to the final.
However, team tournaments like the Billie Jean King Cup function like the FIFA World Cup in soccer. There, national teams compete in round robin group stages before progressing to the knockout stages if they garner enough points to qualify.
What’s more, events will have very different prize pools and, for some, ranking points on offer, depending on their prestige. For example, the winner of one of the Slams will have 2,000 points added to their total, while winners of the WTA 1000, 500, and 250 competitions get 1,000, 500, and 250.

WTA Tennis Betting Tips & Strategies
Betting on tennis doesn't have to be complicated! But before placing your first WTA tennis bets, developing a tennis betting strategy is helpful. So, with that in mind, here are some betting tips to help you get started with your online sports betting:
Know the surface: For many players, surface matters, and it is important to know what the game will be played on. For example, the US Open courts are medium-fast hard courts, while Roland Garros uses clay.
Know records: Head-to-head records are always important to know. For example, Serena Williams’ most-played opponent was her sister, Venus, whom she had beaten 19 times and lost to 12. This can be a good indicator that a fixture might swing a certain way.
Watch the matches: Live streaming and live betting markets aren’t just a fun way to bet - they give you the chance to learn about players’ form. Staying up to date on in-play scores can perhaps help you pick out a match winner correctly in fixtures as the tournament progresses.
Become an expert reader: Understanding odds is key to understanding probabilities and potential payouts. Learn to read odds in a number of formats, including the American odds format, decimal odds, and the fractional format.
Diversify: The WTA Tour includes great events with star players like Jasmine Paolini, Naomi Osaka, and Sofia Kenin battling it out for tennis rankings and silverware, including in Olympic tennis. Exploring other events can help you build a strong tennis betting knowledge.
Manage bankroll: Staying on top of your funds is key to success, and you can find bankroll management strategy guides when you read our Stake blogs, including the Kelly Criterion and Martingale.
Listen to the pros: You may think you have the perfect picks for the Australian Open to upset the match betting odds. However, some professionals dedicate their careers to analysing form and making predictions on the US Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and WTA Finals - lean on them.
