The heyday of the LMB came soon after World War II, when it convinced MLB players to play for teams in Mexico rather than American clubs. This became a moot point in 1955 when the Mexican League was linked with MLB by being classified as a Double-A league. Between 1967 and 2021, the Mexican League had triple-A classification, which is a testament to the high quality of play. However, the LMB went back to being an independent league in 2021 and now has no firm association with MLB.
Previous Mexican Baseball League (LMB) Winners & Iconic Players
In LMB history, Diablos Rojos de Mexico is the most successful team, winning 18 total championships. This includes back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2025. They’ve also been the runners-up in the Series del Rey 17 times, which is more than any other LMB team. After Diablos Rojos de México, Tigres de Quintana Roo and Sultanes de Monterrey are the most successful LMB franchises, with 12 and 10 titles, respectively. Outside of these three clubs, no LMB team has won more than six championships.
The Mexican Baseball League is also where many star players got their start before moving to Major League Baseball. The legendary Fernando Valenzuela is the best example, as he was scouted by the Dodgers while pitching in the Mexican League. Vinny Castilla and Esteban Loaiza, both two-time MLB all-stars, also spent time in the LMB before going to the big leagues. Among players who never made it to MLB, Hector Espino is widely considered the best player in LMB history, as he’s often called the Mexican Babe Ruth.
Format & Schedule of the Mexican Baseball League (LMB)
There are 20 teams in the LMB, divided evenly into North and South divisions, similar to the National League and American League in MLB. Each team plays 90 games during the regular season, which lasts from April to September. The top six teams in each division qualify for the playoffs. There are three rounds of playoffs, culminating in the best-of-7 championship series called the Series del Rey, which is the World Series of Mexican baseball.
