What is League of Legends?

League of Legends (LoL) is one of the biggest and most popular Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games. Aside from being fun to play, the top players utilise complex strategies and teamplay to find success, which makes it perfect for Esports.

LoL was developed by Riot Games and launched in 2009. The game was actually developed off the back of Warcraft III’s Defence of the Ancients map, but the game has changed a lot since its release, introducing new champions, abilities and maps for players to enjoy.

The premise of the game is simple: 2 teams of 5 players compete across a map to destroy the enemy team’s main base structure, known as the Nexus. Each player controls a champion, which all have unique abilities and gain experience through combat to increase their power. Players must work closely with their teammates to defeat enemy champions and destroy turrets to make their way through lanes and into the enemy base.

The fact that League of Legends was released as a free-to-play game helped fuel its incredible rise in popularity, and it quickly became one of the best-loved MOBA games of its time. By 2011, LoL had approximately 15 million online players.

The first-ever League of Legends World Championship was held in 2011 at DreamHack. By 2024, the Grand Final of the tournament had grown to attract 6.94 million peak viewers, a new Esports record.

League of Legends Betting Tips & Strategies

  1. Consider the match format and tournament trends - LoL can be decided by a single game or by a best-of-3 or 5 series. For best-of-1 matches, there’s a higher potential for upsets, while the stronger team will generally always have a better chance of winning in best-of-3 or 5 matches. You should also pay attention to the type of tournament, whether it’s LAN or online, and the region. Different trends, strategies and playstyles may be popular in different regions.

  2. Player matchups - While LoL is a team game, individual players can make a huge difference to matches, especially when they’re matched up against an opponent that feeds their strengths. Look at head-to-head histories and consider the individual lane matchups of the match.

  3. Meta and adaptability - Teams that are able to utilise a number of different champions and team compositions are typically more successful. While some teams depend on meta picks, those that are able to adapt and respond better to changes will have a better chance of achieving victory.

  4. Follow our guides and predictions - We’ve created a lot of helpful guides to help you make successful bets. For example, our guide to MOBA betting and MOBA terminology guide. We also share tips and predictions for every major tournament, such as the LoL Worlds picks.
