What is Horse Racing Betting

History of Horse Racing in Asia

Horse racing has a long and interesting history in Asia. Horses are believed to have been domesticated around 4,500 BC by nomadic tribes living in Central Asia, and these tribes would often race horses to train their military skills. This practice continued across the continent, with records that show Ancient societies in China and India enjoyed breeding and training horses for breeding.

In the 19th century, Western-style horse racing was introduced to Japan for the first time, though a form of horse racing had been practised in the Kamo Kurabeuma for more than 1,000 years as a form of religious ritual.

Over the 19th century, colonial influence driven by Great Britain helped popularise the sport of horse racing in India and Hong Kong, which still follow British-style horse racing traditions today. The first racecourse in India was established in 19777, and the Madras Race Club was formed in 1837. Later on, the Hong Kong Jockey Club was founded in 1884.

Until recently, Singapore had also been home to the Singapore Turf Club, although this was closed in 2023 due to declining popularity and growing land scarcity.

Today, horse racing in Asia remains a popular sport, with the Asian Racing Federation helping to regulate the sport across the continent.

Types of Racing

There are several different types of Asian horse races, which use different tracks and rules:

  • Flat racing - A standard race between two points over either a straight or oval track. The race track can be of various lengths and different surfaces, including dirt, turf and synthetic materials may be used.

  • Jump racing - Known as Steeplechasing or National Hunt racing, these races use tracks which are marked by obstacles that the horses must jump over.

  • Harness racing - Each horse pulls a driver who pilots a cart known as a sulky.

  • Endurance racing - Any horse race that is 25 miles or over is considered an endurance race.

Horse Racing Rules and Betting

Horse racing rules vary depending on the event, but no matter what kind of race it is, the horse that crosses the finish line with its nose first is always declared the winner. If the results are too close to call, a photo finish is used to determine which finished in front.

At the start of the race, horses are locked within a starting stall or behind a gate, which opens at the start. If horses break away early, a false start may be called, which results in a restart.

During the race, every jockey is identified by their shirt, which is designed with unique patterns and colours. They may use a whip to encourage their horse, although there are strict rules regarding how and how often this can be used.

If a jockey falls from their horse, that horse is disqualified. A horse must cross the finish line while its jockey is still in the saddle in order to finish the race.

Betting is a major part of the history and culture of horse racing, and it remains a highly popular sport to bet on. Most race tracks offer betting options, though you can also bet online using our sportsbook. With Stake, you can even switch between odds formats, including Asian options like Indonesian, Hong Kong and Malaysian odds.
