What is Greyhound Racing Betting

History of Greyhound Racing

Greyhounds are a type of sighthound, which are dogs that were bred for hunting by sight rather than smell. These sighthounds are among the oldest dog breeds in the world, with evidence of their existence in Ancient Egyptian and Celtic European societies. During the Middle Ages, greyhounds could only be owned by the ruling class, who used them for coursing deer for meat and sport. Later on, this competition was specialised into hare coursing, which led to modern greyhound racing as we know it today. Greyhounds first arrived in Australia in 1788, where they were used for coursing.

In 1912, the mechanical lure was invented by Owen Patrick Smith. This device offered a humane alternative to the live hares and jackrabbits that were used to race dogs in hare coursing. It also allowed dogs to be raced around a circular or oval track, with the dogs trained to chase the mechanical lure, also known as a tin hare. The first greyhound race in Australia to use a tin hare took place in 1927 at Epping racecourse in Sydney. Today, Australia is home to the world’s largest greyhound racing industry. However, the greyhound racing industry in New Zealand is shutting down, with a formal end date of 1 August 2026.

Types of Racing

There are many different forms of greyhound racing, including:

  • Sprint races - Between 300 and 400 metres in length, involving just 2 bends of a 4 bend track.

  • Standard races - Generally 500 metres, this is the most common race length.

  • Staying races - Longer races between 600 and 700 metres.

  • Marathon races - Racing from 800 to 1,000 metres.

  • Hurdle races - Low obstacles are placed on the greyhound tracks, which dogs must jump over as they race.

Greyhound Racing Rules and Betting

No matter what type of greyhound racing, the race begins with the release of the mechanical lure, which the greyhounds chase around an oval track. Dogs are positioned inside traps, which are opened at the beginning of the race. Each dog’s starting trap is determined by a draw. Each dog also wears a vest with unique colours and patterns for easy identification during the race.

The greyhound whose nose crosses the finish line first is declared the winner, with a photo finish used to determine the result if it’s too close to call. A greyhound that deliberately interferes with another dog during the race is disqualified.

Greyhound race betting has always been a major part of the sport, with wagers placed on traditional coursing. In this sense, it shares some similarities to horse racing. When modern mechanical lures were introduced, the Australian government initially refused to allow betting, but the totaliser pool betting system was introduced in 1930.
