What is Starcraft 2?
StarCraft, which was first released in 1998, was one of the most popular examples of a rapidly growing type of video game, the real-time strategy (RTS) game. Developed by Blizzard Entertainment, StarCraft introduced unique factions to RTS gameplay and combined them with a compelling story.
Following the success of the original game, Blizzard released several expansions, with the sequel, StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty, released in 2010 as a sequel to the StarCraft original. All games in the StarCraft series are set in the far future, with players taking control of one of the 3 races fighting for dominance across the galaxy. Whether it’s the Zerg, the Protoss or the Terran, each faction offers its own unique abilities and units.
Although it offers a story mode, StarCraft 2 (SC2) became best known for its legendary multiplayer and the world’s premier real-time strategy Esport. Matches are usually played in 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4 game modes, with players having to gather resources to assemble unique military units and defeat opponents. In professional StarCraft 2, the standard format is 1v1.
History of Competitive Starcraft 2 Esports
StarCraft took flight as a spectator Esport in South Korea in the early 2000s, where tens of thousands of gaming fanatics would cram into arenas to watch the best StarCraft players in their country do battle at tournaments such as the StarCraft Proleague. This led to the creation of Esports as a global phenomenon today, with many modern Esports events utilising features from these early StarCraft tournaments.
The World Cyber Games was first held in the year 2000. The event featured multiple games, including StarCraft: Brood War and was sponsored by the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism. South Korea has remained a hotspot for StarCraft 2 Esports, with many of the biggest and best StarCraft 2 players and teams originating from the country.
Following the launch of StarCraft 2, the Global StarCraft II League was formed as the first professional league, and the game also featured at DreamHack the same year. In 2011, the StarCraft Proleague switched to StarCraft 2, and Blizzard created the World Championship Series. At the time, StarCraft 2 was the most viewed and sponsored Esport in the world.
Although the Proleague ended in 2016 following a match-fixing scandal that involved some of the game’s most successful players, StarCraft 2 underwent a resurgence the following year with the release of the Warchest expansion. In 2018, it was featured at the 2018 Winter Olympics and from 2020 to 2024, the game was an integral part of the ESL Pro Tour. Between 2024 and 2025, the world champion was decided at the Esports World Cup. However, following the end of the partnership between the ESL Pro Tour and StarCraft II, the game was removed from the 2026 EWC.

Map winner: This is a simple bet on which player you think will win a specific map during the match. For example, betting on the outcome of the first map of the match.
