In response to these issues, the CBF created the Copa do Brasil, which promoted the state championships that were no longer represented in the Campeonato Brasileiro. The first edition of the Copa do Brasil took place in 1989, with Gremio crowned champions after winning the final against Sport Club do Recife. Since then, the cup has been won by a total of 17 teams, with Cruzeiro holding the record number of wins at 6.
The competition initially featured 32 clubs in a two-legged knockout format with away goals. However, it was expanded over the years and today features 126 clubs. Ahead of the 2026 Brazilian Copa do Brasil, Corinthians is the reigning champion, defeating Vasco de Gama in the 2025 final.

With 126 teams participating, the first 4 rounds of the Copa do Brasil feature a single-leg elimination game hosted by the lower-ranked team. However, if the match ends in a draw, the road team advances. From the fifth round, which has 32 teams, until the semifinals, the teams play two-legged fixtures with each team hosting a game. The final will be a single fixture that’s played in a neutral stadium. The 2026 Brazil Cup is the first time the tournament has featured a single-fixture final.
