What is the International Soccer Qualification CONCACAF?

The international soccer tournament organised by the FIFA is the most prestigious and important international football tournament. Although the event itself only happens once every four years, there are multiple international soccer games to bet on, including the qualifiers.

CONCACAF is the North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football confederation, which includes 41 member associations for countries and territories throughout the region. The tournament consists of national teams from around the world, with slots given to each confederation. CONCACAF receives 3 direct slots, while there are also 2 inter-confederation play-off slots available for teams to enter the final tournament.

To achieve a place in the major tournament, CONCACAF teams must go through the qualifying stages, which take place in the two years before the tournament.

History of the Football Qualification CONCACAF

The CONCACAF was established in 1961, merging the North American Football Confederation (NAFC) and the Confederación Centroamericana y del Caribe de Fútbol (CCCF).

The very first CONCACAF qualifiers were held in 1965, for the 1966 international competition. 9 teams took part, which were split into 3 groups of 3. Mexico was the first team to qualify from the CONCACAF qualifiers, reaching the tournament for the 6th time in a row.

11 teams from CONCACAF have taken part, with those teams reaching the quarter-finals 5 times.

Format & Schedule of the CONCACAF Qualifiers

The format and schedule of the qualifiers depend on the year and the format of the tournament itself. The 2026 tournament has been expanded to feature 48 teams. As it will be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, these three countries won’t participate in the qualifying process.

32 teams will participate in the CONCACAF qualifying for the 2026 tournament. There are 3 rounds, with teams entering either the first or second round based on their FIFA rankings.

First Round

The first round features 4 teams ranked between 29 and 32. Teams are split into pairs, with home and away games played. The 2 winners progress to the second round.

Second Round

30 teams enter this stage, consisting of the top 28 ranked teams and the 2 winners from the previous stage. Teams are drawn into 6 groups of 5 teams. Each team plays 2 home and away matches against each group opponent, and the group winners and runners-up progress to the third round.

Third Round

12 teams reach this round, where they’ll be drawn into 3 groups. Each team plays home and away games against group opponents. The 3 group winners automatically qualify, while the 2 best-ranked runners-up advance to the inter-confederation play-offs.
