What is the CONCACAF Champions League?
The CONCACAF Champions Cup, formerly known as the CONCACAF Champions League, is an international club soccer competition featuring teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. It’s organised by CONCACAF and shares similarities with other international club tournaments such as the UEFA Champions League, OFC Champions League, Asian Champions League and Copa Libertadores.
Winners of the CONCACAF Champions Cup qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
History of the CONCACAF Champions League
The tournament first began in 1962 as the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup. The inaugural competition featured 8 teams and was split into 3 zones: North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The winners from each zone qualified for the final tournament, with the Central American and Caribbean teams playing a semi-final to determine which would play the North American team in the final. Mexico’s CD Guadalajara won the 2-legged final against Guatemalan club Comunicaciones to lift the trophy for the first time.
The original format of the competition persisted until the creation of Major League Soccer in 1997, which saw it expanded to an 8-team knockout tournament with zonal qualification rounds. In 1998, the tournament was won by a North American team for the first time, as DC United beat Toluca in the final.
2002 saw the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup expanded once more to include 16 teams in the knockout stage, and since 2005, the champion of the competition has gained entry to the FIFA Club World Cup.
In 2008, the tournament was renamed as the CONCACAF Champions League and expanded to include 24 teams, with direct qualification for Central American clubs for the first time. Between 2008 and 2021, the competition was dominated by teams playing in Mexico’s Liga MX, with the 13-season winning streak by Mexican teams ended in 2022 by Seattle Sounders.
From 2024, the tournament name was changed once more to the CONCACAF Champions Cup, while expanding to include 27 teams from 10 associations.
