The Intercontinental Cup is a single-elimination cup competition for club teams. It’s an annual tournament that brings together the club champions of each of the 6 FIFA confederations. The 6 participants are the reigning champions of the UEFA Champions League in Europe, the Copa Libertadores in South America, the AFC Champions League Elite in Asia, the CONCACAF Champions League in North and Central America, the CAF Champions League in Africa, and the OFC Professional League for the Oceania federation.

The competition is considered a continuation of the smaller club competition that was played annually from 2000 to 2023, following a similar format and scope. The idea for the Intercontinental Cup came about when that competition was expanded from 6 teams to 32 teams for the 2025 edition.

The inaugural Intercontinental Cup in 2024 was won by Spanish side Real Madrid, which defeated Pachuca of Mexico 3-0 in the final on goals by Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo, and Vinicius Junior. The 2025 Intercontinental Cup was won by French side PSG, which defeated Brazilian club Flamengo in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw.
Format & Schedule of the Intercontinental Cup
The Intercontinental Cup has no group stage, just a knockout phase. The competition is played across multiple windows, with the first matches being played in September or October and the final matches being played in December. There are 5 total matches played.
The first match is the African-Asian-Pacific Cup playoff, featuring the Oceania representative against either the African or Asian representative. The winner of that match faces either the African or Asian representative in the African-Asian-Pacific Cup. The African and Asian teams alternate, which one has a bye and which one plays in the playoff.
The winner of the African-Asian-Pacific Cup advances to the Challenger Cup against the winner of the Derby of the Americas, which features the South American representative playing the CONCACAF Champions League representative. The winner of the Challenger Cup advances to the Intercontinental Cup Final against the European representative. The European team in the competition always receives a bye straight to the final.
