What is PFL (Professional Fighters League)?
The PFL is an American-based mixed martial arts promotion that has become widely known as the world’s second-largest MMA organisation. It originally started as a league format with a regular season, playoffs and championship rather than year-round events. The PFL became known for its $1 million prize fund for championship winners. It also established multiple regional events in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, featuring local prospects and upcoming fighters. These features have helped it stand out from other promotions, such as the UFC, and make an impression on fans.
History of the PFL
The Professional Fighters League was born from the World Series of Fighting (WSOF), which was formed in 2012. This MMA promotion held over 35 events all over the world and featured prominent fighters, including Justin Gaethje, Marlon Moraes and Lance Palmer.
In 2017, the WSOF was purchased by MMAX Investment Partners, a group of venture capitalists who saw the growing potential of MMA as a sport. The group announced that the WSOF would be restructured as the Professional Fighters League, with Donn Davis as the founder of this new fighting organisation.
The PFL became the first MMA organisation to use a league format rather than holding one-off events, and in 2018, the first event took place. Fighters could compete throughout the regular season to earn points for wins and additional points for finishes. At the end of the season, the highest-ranked fighters in each division progressed to the playoffs for a chance to fight for the championship and a $1 million prize.
In 2023, the PFL announced it had purchased competing MMA promotion Bellator. The first PFL vs Bellator event was held in February 2024, with champions from each promotion competing against one another. 2023 and 2024 also saw the launch of regional leagues, such as PFL Europe, PFL MENA, PFL Africa and PFL Pacific. Each league holds multiple events throughout the year. In 2025, the PFL cancelled its seasonal league and moved towards holding single-elimination tournaments.
In 2026, CEO Donn Davis stepped down and was replaced by John Martin, an experienced media executive. Meanwhile, the PFL announced it would be moving away from its tournament format for its main events, instead building cards around the biggest fights.
Format & Schedule of PFL
The PFL format is now similar to other MMA promotions like the UFC, Rizin FF and Cage Warriors. There is one champion per weight class, and traditional matchmaking is used to rank fighters and create the best fights for each event. Throughout the year, the PFL holds multiple main events at cities across the US, while its regional leagues across Africa and MENA continue to follow a single-elimination seasonal tournament format as a development pathway for emerging talent.
In 2026, the following events have been confirmed:
7 February - PFL Dubai: Nurmagomedov vs. Davis
20 March - PFL Madrid: van Steenis vs. Edwards 2
28 March - PFL Pittsburgh: Eblen vs. Battle

You can switch between decimal, fractional and American odds to make them easier to read.
PFL & MMA Betting Tips, Predictions & Strategies
Stylistic matchups: In MMA, styles make fights, and while most modern fighters are well-rounded, they still typically excel in certain areas while having weaknesses in others. For example, a grappling expert might struggle with striking exchanges. It’s important to consider these stylistic matchups when making your picks.
Research your bets: There are a lot of detailed statistics and data available online to give you better insights into the fights and the likely outcomes. Pay attention to recent form, overall records and the quality of each fighter’s recent opposition. Consider whether or not the tournament format will likely have an impact on their performance, and don’t forget to check out fight videos online.
Live betting: Live betting offers an excellent opportunity to get better odds on your bets. As the fight happens, the odds and lines will move in real time, and if you’re smart, you can take advantage of this. Make sure you tune into the free live stream at the same time, that way you’ll have a better understanding of the fight.
