History & Iconic ONE Championship Events

ONE FC was founded by Chatri Sityodtong in Singapore in 2011, and its very first event was held on 3 September of that year, featuring the classic Pride Fighting Championships ruleset, which allowed kicks to downed opponents. The organisation would go on to hold multiple events in the years that followed, until it was rebranded as ONE Championship in 2015. The rebrand also saw ONE Championship expand into other combat sports, holding Muay Thai, boxing and kickboxing matches for the first time. In 2022, the organisation also featured submission grappling events for the first time.

Since its inception, ONE Championship has held thousands of fights across multiple disciplines of combat sports. Here are a few of the most iconic bouts:

Rodtang vs Superlek - Rodtang and Superlek are two of ONE Championship’s biggest stars in Muay Thai, and they put on a brutal show in this super fight in 2023.
Igor Svirid vs Vitaly Bigdash - A fight for the middleweight MMA world championship in 2015 saw some incredible exchanges and multiple knockdowns as both fighters put it all on the line.
Petchmorakot vs Tawanchai - Another Muay Thai fight, this time with the featherweight world championship on the line. Both fighters showed off their incredible skills, with punches, knees, elbows and kicks used to great effect over the full 5 rounds.
Superbon vs Chingiz Allazov - The 2023 featherweight kickboxing world championship was on the line when Superbon and Allazov went head-to-head, both fighters showing why they were ranked the best in the world.

Format and Schedule of ONE Championship Fights

ONE Championship holds several events a year, including numbered PPV events and regular Friday Night Fights at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. All ONE Championship events typically contain a mixture of different combat sports, including the following:

MMA

In ONE Championship, MMA bouts are contested over 3 rounds, each lasting 5 minutes. Title fights are fought over 5 rounds. Each fighter uses 4-ounce gloves, and fights can be won by submission, KO/TKO or by having the higher score on the judges' scorecards. Unlike other promotions, fights are scored as a whole, rather than using round-by-round scoring.

Kickboxing

Kickboxing bouts in ONE Championship follow the Global Kickboxing rule set. Fights are either 3 or 5 rounds, each lasting 3 minutes. Fighters use 8-ounce gloves for bantamweight divisions and below, or 10-ounce gloves for higher weight classes. Catching kicks isn’t allowed, and neither is clinching or sweeping an opponent. If a fight ends without a KO/TKO, the 10-point must system is used to score fights, with each round scored based on knockdowns, damage, clean strikes and aggression.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai matches in ONE Championship follow the Global Muay Thai ruleset, with elbows, clinches, sweeps and throws permitted. A major difference between regular Muay Thai and the fights in this promotion is the fact that fighters here use 4-ounce gloves. In addition, clinching is often separated quickly. The same 10-point must system as kickboxing is also used to score Muay Thai fights.

Submission Grappling

The Global Submission Grappling rule set is used, with matches consisting of a single, 10-minute round. Wins are decided by submissions, either by verbal tapout, referee or corner stoppage. If neither fighter is submitted, judges score the fight based on submission attempts, and aggression is a tie-breaker.
