What is Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA)?

Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA) is an American mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion based in Houston, Texas. It was founded in 2016 following the merger of Legacy Fighting Championship and Resurrection Fighting Alliance.

As with other MMA promotions like the Ultimate Fight Championship (UFC), LFC hosts events that feature fights between professional MMA fighters. LFA events have been held across the United States and Brazil, with multiple weight classes and championships.

History & Iconic LFA Fights

The Legacy Fighting Championship, known as Legacy FC or LFC, held its first-ever event in 2009. The promotion was home to a large roster of talented fighters, including many who went on to fight in the UFC, such as Valentina Schevchenko, Holly Holm, Sage Northcutt and Derrick Lewis.

In 2012, the Florida-based MMA promotion Titan Fighting Championships was acquired by Resurrection Fighting Alliance (RFA). The RFA was led by Ed Soares, a noted MMA manager of several major stars, including Anderson Silva.

In 2016, the LFC and RFA merged to produce the LFA, which has become one of the biggest MMA promotions in the US outside of the UFC. The promotion has a good relationship with the UFC, with its events broadcast over UFC Fight Pass, and many of its champions going on to appear in the UFC either directly or through the Contender Series.

Some of the most notable LFA fights include:

  • Alex Pereira vs Thomas Powell - This was Pereira’s 3rd MMA fight, after his first fight in Brazil, 5 years before, had ended in a submission loss. This time, fans got to see the power of the future UFC middleweight champion as he knocked out his opponent in the first round with his signature left hook.

  • Sean O’Malley vs David Nuzzo - In 2017, Sean O’Malley had just 6 professional MMA fights. Although they were all wins, none of them was as spectacular as his wheel kick knockout over David Nuzzo in round 1. The fight earned him his 7th straight win and a place on the Contender Series, which he then turned into a UFC contract before going on to become the bantamweight world champion.

  • John Poppie vs Andrew Sanchez - Described as an underground classic and the most violent fight in LFA MMA history, this took place under the RFA banner, but features everything you’d want in a high-level MMA fight, with excellent striking and grappling skills on display from both fighters, as well as tremendous toughness.

Format & Schedule of LFA

Standard LFA fights are scheduled for 3, 5-minute rounds. Fighters can win a round on the judges’ scorecards if they show better skills, damage and control. At the end of the fight, the winner is declared, but fighters can end the fight early by KOing or submitting their opponent, or forcing the referee to step in and stop the action.

The LFA holds several events throughout the year, although the number of events varies year by year. Most of these events are held in the US, but LFA also visits Brazil regularly. In 2025, it held a total of 25 events, with 5 held in Brazil.
