History of League of Legends World Championship
The League of Legends Season 1 Championship was first held in 2011, offering a $100,00 prize pool to the top teams. It took place at Dreamhack Summer in June and featured 8 teams, with entrants from Europe, North America and Southeast Asia. Over 1.6 million viewers watched the event, which was won by Fnatic.
Since the inaugural event, the World Championship has grown in terms of teams taking part and the prize money offered. There have been 9 world champions in total, with 9 titles won by South Korean teams, 3 by China, 1 by an EMEA team and 1 by an Asia-Pacific team. T1 are the most successful team in the history of the World Championships, having won 5 titles.
Who is Playing in LoL Worlds 2025
The Worlds 2025 will feature a total of 17 teams. 3 teams will enter from each of:
The League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK)
The League of Legends Champions Pacific (LCP)
The League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC)
The League of Legends Pro League (LPL)
The League of the Americas (LTA)
In addition, a play-in match will take place between the 4th-seeded teams from the LCK and the LPL. This will decide the 16th team for the tournament’s Swiss stage.

PSG Talon - 12th-14th at Worlds 2024.

Format and Schedule of LoL Worlds 2025
14 October - Play-In - Beijing
The 16th team will be decided by a best-of-5 series between the 2025 Mid-Season Invitational winner, Gen.G and the LPL Regional Finals runner-up. The winning team will join the other 15 teams in the Swiss stage.
15-25 October - Swiss Stage - Beijing
The Swiss group stage consists of 5 rounds, over which teams that reach 3 wins will advance to the knockout stage and teams that lose 3 matches will be eliminated. All matches are best-of-1, except for elimination and advancement matches, which are played to the best of 3 games while the fearless draft is in effect.
28 October to 9 November - Knockout Stage - Shanghai and Chengdu
8 teams will progress from the Swiss stage to the knockout rounds, playing in a single elimination bracket. All matches during this stage are played to the best of 5 games and the fearless draft is in effect. The quarter finals and semifinals will be played in Shanghai, while the finals will take place in Chengdu.
