History of Dota 2 - The International

The very first edition of The International took place at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, in 2011. Natus Vincere were the inaugural champions of the tournament, taking home the $1 million grand prize. Since then, The International has been held annually at arenas around the world, including the US, Canada, China, Romania, Singapore and Denmark. However, the 2020 edition of the tournament was cancelled due to the global pandemic.

Valve, the developers of Dota 2, are also involved in organising The International, and in 2013, they announced that the prize pool for the tournament would be crowdfunded by players. By purchasing an in-game battle pass, known as the Compendium, players would directly contribute to the prize pool. This allowed the total prize money to exceed $40 million in 2021.

In 2017, Valve introduced the Dota Pro Circuit, which allowed teams to qualify for The International, instead of relying on invites. However, Valve discontinued the Pro Circuit, along with the battle pass, in 2023, marking big changes for The International. Now, teams receive direct invites or enter through regional qualifiers, while the prize pool is offered by Valve.

Format and Schedule of The International 2025

16 Dota 2 teams will compete in The International, with a prize pool worth $2 million. 8 receive direct invitations based on recent performances, while the remaining 8 must qualify through regional tournaments.

The tournament is split into three stages:

Group Stage - The Road to The International

• 4-7 September

• 5 rounds of matches are played.

• All matches are played to the best of 3.

• The top 3 teams automatically advance to the playoffs.

• Teams between 4th and 13th play in the special elimination round.

Elimination Round

• 10 teams between 4th and 13th enter this round.

• Single-elimination best of 3 matches.

• Only 5 teams will progress to the playoffs.

Play-Offs - The International

• 11-14 September

• Double-elimination bracket.

• Matches are played to the best of 3.

• Grand Finals are played to the best of 5.
