Since 2011, Cologne has become a regular part of the Intel Extreme Masters season, featuring in all but 5 seasons since its first edition. 2014 saw the first Counter-Strike tournament held in Cologne, and in 2015 it was held in the LANXESS Arena for the first time. Format and Schedule of the Intel Extreme Masters Cologne

Stage 1: Play-In - July 23-25

The tournament begins with the play-in stage, where 16 teams that didn’t directly qualify will participate in. This stage uses a double-elimination bracket, with matches played to the best of 3. The top 8 teams from the play-ins will join the other 8 teams in the group stage.

Stage 2: Group Stage - July 16-30

Teams are drawn into 2 groups, and each team competes in a best-of-3 series against their opponents in the group. The format is double-elimination, and the top 3 teams from this stage will reach the playoffs to determine the champions.

Winners of the group stage progress straight to the semifinals of the playoffs, while group stage runners-up advance to the quarterfinals as the high seeds, and 3rd place teams advance to the quarterfinals as the low seeds.

Stage 3: Playoffs - August 1-3

During the playoffs, the bracket is a single-elimination format. Quarterfinals and semifinals are played to the best of 3 games, while the Grand Finals are a best-of-5 series.

A total prize pool of $1 million is available to be won, with the champions receiving $400,000 in prize money.
