What are Exhibition Fights?
An exhibition fight is a demonstration of skills that prioritises entertainment rather than determining which fighter is better. In most cases, these bouts aren’t added to an official record, and a winner isn’t declared. Exhibition matches might be used to showcase popular retired fighters or give fighters a way to stay sharp without risking injury. Some celebrities have also participated in exhibition boxing matches, usually to promote a good cause or raise money for charity. While they’re not commonly available to bet on due to the uncompetitive nature of the fight, some sportsbooks still offer betting markets.
Differences Between Exhibition Fights & Regular Professional Fights
No official winner - Unlike regular professional boxing fights, a winner usually isn’t declared in an exhibition match. As such, there usually aren’t any judges, and in most cases, neither fighter is trying to knock their opponent out, unlike in a regular fight. However, knockout victories do still sometimes occur.
No official record - Exhibition fights aren’t usually entered into a fighter’s official record
Fighters - In professional boxing matches, both fighters are highly trained and have spent years dedicated to the sport. However, exhibition matches can involve retired fighters or even untrained celebrities.
Rules - To improve safety and prevent injuries, exhibition matches sometimes limit the number of rounds, the length of rounds and have other rules such as larger gloves or headgear.
History & Iconic Exhibition Fights
Throughout history, there have been many famous boxing exhibition fights, often involving major celebrities, famous athletes and some of the world’s best boxers. Notable examples include:
Ali vs Inoki - Muhammad Ali is widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time and had several exhibition fights over the course of his career, including against Japanese professional wrestler and mixed martial artist Antonio Inoki.
George Foreman vs 5 - In 1975, after losing the title of heavyweight champion to his rival Muhammad Ali, George Foreman sought to rebuild his reputation by taking on 5 professional boxers in one night. He KO’d 3 of the boxers, while 2 went the full distance.
Oscar De La Hoya vs Shaquille O’Neal - Over the course of his career, Oscar De La Hoya won 11 world titles in 6 weight classes and was a major PPV star. He retired in 2009 and had an exhibition fight against the 7-foot-tall former NBA player, Shaquille O’Neal. After 5 rounds, De La Hoya was declared the winner.
Floyd Mayweather vs Tenshin Nasukawa - Mayweather retired in 2017 with an undefeated professional record, having won 15 world titles across 5 weight classes. In 2018, he took on Japanese professional kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in an exhibition boxing match, which Mayweather won by stopping his opponent in the first round.
Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr - Former heavyweight division champions Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr came out os retirement in 2020 for an exhibition boxing match, which was ruled as a draw.
Floyd Mayweather vs Logan Paul - Floyd Mayweather stepped into the ring once more in 2021 for an exhibition bout against YouTuber Logan Paul, the brother of Jake Paul. The fight sold more than 1 million PPV buys
Format and Schedule of Exhibition Fights
The format and schedule of exhibition fights vary, with most fights scheduled for 3-5 rounds rather than 10 or 12 like in a professional match. In addition, rounds are usually 2 minutes long rather than 3, though this can vary. There’s no regular schedule either, as exhibition fights are usually one-off matches organised by the fighters involved in a promotion.
2026 - Mayweather vs Tyson
Floyd Mayweather, who has competed in 8 exhibition fights since he retired undefeated in 2017, has announced an upcoming boxing match against Mike Tyson in Spring 2026. Tyson, who most recently fought Jake Paul at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will be a tough opponent for the former lightweight, although he’s 11 years older than Mayweather.
