Liga FUTVE, also known as Liga Venezolana, is the promotional name for the Venezuelan Primera Division, the top level in the Venezuelan football league system. All of the best soccer teams in the country play in Liga FUTVE, competing for the chance to be crowned national champions. It’s considered one of the most competitive leagues in South America, along with the Colombian Primera Division and the Peruvian Primera Division. Teams playing in the Venezuelan League can also qualify for international competitions like the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana.
History of Liga FUTVE
Football was first played in Venezuela in 1876, as two teams consisting of players from Britain, Corsica, and Trinidad took part in a match near the town of El Callao. In the early 1900s, the first official clubs began to be formed, and in 1921, the Primera Division was first held.
In 1926, the National Football Federation was established. However, the organisation of soccer was still fairly chaotic in its early days. The National Football Federation would later dissolve in 1932, although it was replaced by the Venezuelan Football League in 1938, which would become the Venezuelan Football Association in 1951.
Until 1957, the Primera Division was played only by amateur clubs located within Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela. However, as the professionalism of the league grew, teams from other provinces also entered the league. América won the first-ever league title in 1921, but the first champions of the professional era were Universidad Central.

Since the Primera Division began, Caracas is the most successful team in the country, with 12 titles and 5 runners-up, while Deportivo Táchira has 11 wins and 9 runners-up. Universidad Central began the 2026 Liga FUTVE as the reigning champion after winning the 2025 championship. It was the club’s fourth title in Liga FUTVE history. Of course, Deportivo Tachira has been Venezuela’s top team in recent years, winning three championships in four years from 2021 to 2024.
In Liga FUTVE history, Juan Garcia is one of the most iconic players, scoring a record 271 goals, with 160 of those goals being scored while playing for Minerven. However, most consider Juan Arango to be the best Venezuelan player of all time. Richard Blanco, Edder Farias, and Fernando Aristeguieta are also among the top players in Liga FUTVE history.
Format & Schedule of Liga FUTVE
The Liga FUTVE season typically runs from late January until early December. The first phase is the Torneo Apertura, in which the 14 teams play a full round robin schedule. After those 13 games, the top 8 teams advance to the semifinals.
During the semifinals, the 8 teams are divided into 2 groups of four teams, with each team facing their group opponents twice. The two winners of the groups advance to the Serie Final to decide the champions of the season.
The second half of the season is the Torneo Clausura, which works in the same way, with a 13-game schedule deciding the top 8 teams, which advance to the semifinals. After the final of the Torneo Clausura, the winner of the Apertura plays the winner of the Clausura in a two-leg Grand Final. Also, the team with the fewest points across the 26 games in the aggregate table is relegated to the Segunda Division.
