What is the UEFA Conference League?
The UEFA Conference League, also known as the UECL or just the Conference League, is the 3rd-tier of European club soccer. The competition features teams from all over Europe, and is directly below the UEFA Europa League (UEL) and the UEFA Champions League (UCL) European football tournaments.
Just like with the UCL and UEL, teams qualify for the Conference League based on their performance in their domestic league and association ranking. However, unlike these competitions, there’s no automatic qualification to the Conference League. Instead, all 184 teams have to go through at least one qualifying round for the opportunity to be one of the 36 teams in the league phase.
History of the UEFA Conference League
The Conference League is a relatively new tournament compared to other European competitions. It was established in 2021, though UEFA had planned a 3rd-tier competition since at least 2015. When it was unveiled in 2021, it was originally known as the UEFA Europa Conference League, with Roma crowned as the inaugural champions.
However, for the 2024/25 season, the tournament was rebranded as the Conference League, and the 32-team group stage was replaced with a 36-team league phase. This change in format mirrored the updates made to both the Europa League and the Champions League.

Format & Schedule of the 2025/26 UEFA Europa Conference League
Teams enter the Conference League based on their domestic league position and association UEFA coefficient ranking. After qualifiers, the league phase begins, and the top teams in the league will progress to the knockout round to determine the champions.
Qualifying Rounds
184 teams play in the Conference League, though only 36 will progress through the qualifying rounds to the league phase.

League Phase
36 teams progress to the league phase, where a draw will determine the 4 home and 4 away games that each team must play. At the close of Matchday 8, the top teams will progress to the round of 16 or the knockout play-offs.

Knockout Phase
The knockout round begins with the play-offs to determine the final 16. Matches in this round are played over two legs, with the aggregate score used to decide the winner. Extra time and penalties are used if the scores are level.
