What is the Ontario Hockey League (OHL)?
The Ontario Hockey League, better known as the OHL, is one of the three major junior hockey leagues of Canada. Together with the Western Hockey League and the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, these organisations form the Canadian Hockey League.
The OHL is open to players aged between 16 and 20 and is one of the best places to see the NHL stars of the future. Approximately 20% of players on active NHL rosters have come from the OHL. Currently, 20 teams take part in the league, with 17 from Ontario, 2 from Michigan, and 1 from Pennsylvania.
History of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Hockey leagues were first established in Ontario in 1890 by the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA). Just 2 years later, the OHA established senior and intermediate divisions, although players were categorised by skill level rather than age. However, this changed in 1896, when age-limited divisions were created to allow talented young players to develop in the sport.
Since age-limited divisions were introduced to Ontario hockey, several changes have helped shape the OHL we know today. In 1933, the junior division was split into two levels, and in 1970, there was an additional split of the top level into two tiers.
In 1974, the top tier of junior Ontario hockey broke away to become the independent Ontario Major Junior Hockey League, which would become the Ontario Hockey League in 1980. Since then, the league has grown considerably thanks to broadcast and commercial deals.

Wayne Gretzky - Set a rookie record with 70 goals and 112 assists in 1977-78, and has the playoffs MVP award named after him.
Bobby Orr - One of the best defenseman players.
Steve Yzerman - Iconic captain for the Detroit Red Wings and Hall of Famer.
Paul Coffey - One of the highest-scoring defensemen in NHL history.
Format & Schedule of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
The 20 teams taking part in the OHL play a 68-game schedule, which begins in the third week of September and runs to the third week of March. Matches are normally scheduled between Thursday and Sunday to minimise the number of school days that players miss.
Teams are split between the Western and Eastern Conferences, and the top 16 teams progress to the playoffs.
During the playoffs, teams play a best-of-7 series, with the winner advancing to the next round. The conference champions are decided from the first 3 rounds of the playoffs, before the winners progress to the finals to decide the OHL season champions. Here’s the schedule for the 2025-26 OHL season:

The OHL playoff champions are awarded the J. Ross Robertson Cup and will then compete with the winners of the Western Hockey League and the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League for the Memorial Cup.
