What is the Pakistan Super League?
The PSL is Pakistan’s top-level cricket competition in the T20 format of the game. It is similar to the biggest league in India’s cricket scene, in that city franchises take part in a double round robin league stage before progressing to a post-season playoff that determines the overall winner.
History of the PSL
The Pakistan Super League was announced in 2015 by the Pakistan Cricket Board, looking to capture the growing audience for domestic-level T20 matches and rival India’s own competition, which had been held since 2008
Its first edition featured five teams, with four being the capitals of the country’s provinces and one being the country’s federal capital, Islamabad. It was held in the UAE in 2016, and was won by Islamabad United, setting the franchise on the way to becoming the joint-most successful side in PSL history.
Players were initially recruited using a draft system, not unlike leagues in North America like the NFL, MLS, and MLB. However, that has since changed, and for the latest edition, a player auction was held instead, bringing it in line with its neighboring competitions.
The number of franchises has also changed. In 2018, a sixth team was added. The Multan Sultans were added to the list. For 2026, a further two franchises were added in Rawalpindiz (or just Pindiz) and the Hyderabad Kingsmen.
Format & Schedule of PSL 2026
The HBL Pakistan Super League 2026 will get underway on March 26 and run all the way through to the final of the playoff series on May 3. Unlike previous seasons, the double round robin format has been replaced by a group round robin format, where the eight teams will be split into two groups of four, who will play twice against each other. They will also play once against each team of the other group.
At the end of the group stage, the four top teams in the combined standings will progress to the playoffs, the top two to the Qualifier stage and the remaining two to the Eliminator stage. From there, the winner of the Eliminator will play the loser of the Qualifier for a place in the final, where the winner of the Qualifier stage will await.
The eight teams that will feature for the 2026 edition are:

Islamabad United
Karachi Kings
Lahore Qalandars
Multan Sultans
Rawalpindiz
Peshawar Zalmi
Quetta Gladiators
The franchises will all face each other at six venues across the country:
Gadaffi Stadium, Lahore
Imran Khan Cricket Stadium, Peshawar
Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi
Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad
National Bank Stadium, Karachi
Multan Cricket Stadium, Multan
In addition to the Infinity trophy that the champions are awarded, the overall winners will receive US$500,000, the second-place team will receive US$300,000, and the “best franchise contributing towards cricket development” will receive US$200,000.
