Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) is a tactical FPS game, with matches involving two opposing teams of 5 players that take turns attacking or defending an objective. Competitive Counter-Strike 2 is a fast-paced game, with multiple tournaments taking place throughout the season. Among the most prestigious events are the Valve Major Championships, commonly referred to as Majors. There are 2 majors a season, which feature the best CS2 teams in the world.
The StarLadder Budapest Major is an upcoming CS2 Major which begins in November 2025. It’s the 2nd Major of the season after Austin 2025 and will host a total of 32 teams. There’s a $1.25 million prize pool at stake, with the tournament winnings receiving $500,000 in prize money. The tournament is split into 4 stages, concluding with the playoffs to determine the champions.
When is StarLadder Budapest Major 2025?
The StarLadder Budapest Major 2025 begins on 24 November and concludes with the Grand Final on 14 December. The first 3 stages of the tournament will take place at the MTK Sportpark in Budapest, Hungary, with the MVM Dome hosting the playoffs.
History of the Valve Major Championships
The first game in the Counter-Strike series was officially released in 2000 by Valve. It soon became a competitive Esport, with the first international tournament held at the Cyberathlete Professional League Winter Championship in 2001. This is considered to be the first ever Major, although it wasn’t sponsored by Valve.
In 2012, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) was released, and a year later, Valve created a $250,000 prize pool for the first official CS: GO Major. After the tournament, hosted by DreamHack, Valve partnered with the organisers to host 3 Major tournaments a year, and these became the most prestigious events on the Counter-Strike Esports scene.
In 2016, Valve increased the prize pool of Majors to $1 million, but the number of events was reduced from 3 a year to 2. Prize pools increased once more in 2023, with the BLAST Paris Major offering $1.25 million. This tournament also became the last ever CS: GO Major, with the first CS2 Major held in Copenhagen in 2024.
The most successful team in the history of Valve Major Championships is Astralis, which has won 4 titles. Team Vitality won the most recent Major, the BLAST.tv Austin Major 2025, bringing their total titles to 2.

Format and Schedule of the StarLadder Budapest Major
24-27 November - Stage 1
16 teams play in a Swiss System group stage format. Matches are played to the best of 1 (Bo1), but elimination and advancement matches are best of 3 (Bo3). The top 8 teams proceed to the next stage, while the bottom 8 are eliminated.
29 November - 2 December - Stage 2
This stage uses the same format as the previous: Swiss Bo1. Progression matches and elimination matches are Bo3. The top 8 teams from Stage 1 are joined by the Stage 2 invitees. The 8 best teams advance to Stage 3.
4-7 December - Stage 3
This stage also follows the same format as the previous 2 stages. The top 8 teams from Stage 2 are joined by the Stage 3 invitees, and the best 8 teams advance to the playoffs.
11-14 December - Playoffs
The playoffs follow a single-elimination bracket, and all matches are played to the best of 3 games.
