The 68 participants are either the winners of conference tournaments or chosen by the NCAA selection committee based on performance in regular-season games. The first round features just 8 teams, reducing the field to 64. Starting with the second round, every remaining team is in action, with the winner of each game advancing to the next round until one champion remains.
