As of 2024, there are 10 teams that compete in the LKL. However, a total of 28 teams have participated in the LKL during the league’s history. Teams in the LKL are eligible to participate in international club competitions, including Basketball Club Žalgiris, which is a licensed club and permanent member of the EuroLeague.

History of Lithuanian Basketball?

In 1993, eight of the strongest clubs in Lithuania came together to form the Lithuanian Basketball Association, barely three years after Lithuania achieved its current status as an independent nation. Soon after, the Lithuanian Basketball Association was renamed the LKL. In 1996, Lithuanian basketball took a step forward when Zydrunas Ilgauskas became the first player selected in the NBA Draft straight out of the LKL.

There was another monumental moment in 1999 when Žalgiris became the first Lithuanian club to win the EuroLeague, cementing Lithuania as a basketball hotbed in Europe. However, throughout the LKL’s history, Žalgiris and Rytas have been the only teams to win the league championship, so it’s not the most balanced basketball league in the world.

LKL Schedule & Format

The LKL regular season runs from September to May. The teams play a quadruple round robin, meaning each team plays two home games and two road games against every other team. With 10 teams, this adds up to a total of 36 games during the season. Standings in the LKL are kept based on points with teams earning 1 point for a win and 0 points for a loss.

The 8 teams with the most points qualify for the playoffs. The quarterfinal round is a best-of-3 series. The semifinal round is a best-of-5 series. The final is a best-of-7 series. There is also a series to determine third place, which is a best-of-5 series.
