Format & Structure
The Masters is the first major golf championship of the year, taking place in the first week of April. It’s always held at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, United States. The course was formerly a plant nursery, and each hole is named after a plant that formerly grew there.
The 2026 Masters tournament will take place between April 9-12.
Field
The US Masters is an invitational event, with the smallest field of other major championships. 85-100 players are invited based on specific criteria. Past champions are always eligible to take part, and winners of the other major championships in the last 5 years are also invited. Golfers can receive invites based on performances at the Players Championship, the Olympics, or by winning national Amateur championships. The official World Golf Ranking for the previous calendar year is also used to select invitees.
Rules
As with other major championships, the Masters is played over 4 rounds of 18 holes each between Thursday and Sunday. After the first 2 rounds, the field is split, with only players in the top 50 places making the cut. After the 4th round, the winner is the player with the best score. However, if scores are tied, all players tied for the lead enter a sudden-death playoff.
